The Art of Welding

This is a welding class and it’s working in steel and using it as a medium for building three dimensional sculpture. Kitty generally has us come in with drawings
already and from there we bend, cut, and get the pieces in the right order and kind of weld as we go a little bit. A lot of it is just kind of building it organically. It’s just very exciting for the students to
have that kind of freedom to make sculpture, make three dimensional
form quickly. Just the ability to pick up a piece of metal and just stick it on is great. I think it’s good to be familiar with as many
things as you can be as an artist. Like it definitely has many
mediums. This is something, if I just like continue
working as a sculptor, something I would be highly interested in
using as a medium. I think the spatial thinking is totally different from what I’m used to. Being able to think about what something will
look like from multiple angles at the same time. If you don’t like what you’ve put up you can sort of erase it with the oxyacetylene so it’s a very forgiving material. There’s like more safety things involved like between the wood chops and like other
materials and things like that. The worst I’ve had is I smashed my thumb earlier
today but other than that it’s a great time. Everybody is just getting used to the material I think still, but what that means is everybody gets to experiment and figure out
what they can do with welding that they can’t do with other forms. They also are willing to challenge themselves and so we get some really interesting pieces
that come out of the class.
