Testimonial for Ulster BOCES Welding Class

♪ What made you decide to
go into welding first off? When I was 14,
I actually got a job at Benson Steel in Saugerties. It’s a manufacturing company, and I just really fell in
love with the art of it. -The art of what?
-Welding, in all aspects. Cutting, the flying sparks,
the flames, everything. -Why?
-I don’t know. I just really thought
it was something that I could make
a living doing. Over the last two years,
what have you been able to do in the welding class? We’ve covered all topics of
welding, from stick welding to MIG welding, TIG welding, all different cutting processes. Like the stick welding
is the most general. It’s–that’s by itself,
it’s just– actually it’s a steel
electrode that you strike an arc with, and
that’s your weld metal. The MIG, it’s a gas
shielded welding process where it’s a continuous
filler by the rollers. And then TIG is–it’s a
small torch that you hold, and you actually manually
dip the filler metal in, and maintain the arc
with a foot pedal. Are there job opportunities
to be a welder, and like, what, where? We were talking as a class, and all over the world
right now, they’re in need of welders because of new
buildings going up, bridges, repairs on anything,
it’s all metal. A lot of shipyards actually
have a lot of welding going on. Is this something that you
wanna pursue in the future? I hope that when
I’m done in the Navy I can fulfill a career
in welding again. Can you make a good
living being a welder? -Do you know?
-Most definitely. Depending on
certification ranges, $45 an hour plus. And are you getting
any certifications? Right now I’m AWS, which is
American Welding Society, certified in all positions,
unlimited thickness, and coming up we are taking our Department of
Transportation test. Nice, the teacher,
has he prepared you for what you think
is a welding career? Oh definitely,
we go over–every day we go over about
an hour of lesson. So we get the knowledge
part of it down, and then at the end of the
day we have a shop period of about another hour where
we get to put the techniques and information that we learned
in the lessons to work. I think that BOCES definitely
was a great decision, because all the certifications
that come up now, because of the welding program,
all the job opportunities, all just different life
experiences between these life stories
from our teacher, the new friends that you make, because all different
schools come here. It opens you up to a whole
different–to a greater variety of kids, because nine
different schools come here, instead of just your
staying at home school and having only
one group of kids. ♪
