NASA | Warm Ocean Melting Pine Island Glacier

[music] Narrator: The Pine Island Glacier has been called the weak underbelly of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. It’s large, thinning rapidly, and is a major area of focus for researchers concerned with contributions to sea level rise from shrinking ice sheets and glaciers. For years satellites and airborne missions have been observing changes in both the upstream ice flow and the glacier’s floating ice shelf. One of the major factors affecting the ice is the comparatively warm water circulating in Pine Island Bay. This water can eat away at the ice shelf from below. But until now, we haven’t had direct measurements of how warm the water is or how fast that ice is melting. After five years of study and preparation, an international team of researchers has drilled through 500 meters of ice to install a series of instruments below the ice shelf to measure both ice loss and the temperature, salinity, and speed of the water. At one location, they found melt rates of more than 2 inches per day. Scientists will continue to analyze the data from these instruments to learn more about seasonal changes in the interaction of ocean and ice. [beep beep, beep beep]

  1. the north west passage is my canary in the coal mine, when it's closed the climate is cold and vis-versa, since the little ice-age we have had the almeida maximum then the dalton minimum and now the modern maximum, a cycle of 124 years, the planet pluto's extreem elyptical orbit
is 247.686 years and in perihelion 1998.
between 1966 and 1986 neptune was for 20 years outside pluto,s orbit.

  2. You yourself, don't have an objective criteria to select information. The National Academy of Sciences does, founded by Abraham Lincoln. It's the top scientific vetting organization in the USA, and the nation's best scientists have demonstrated, with more than 99% of their scientific papers, that climate change is happening, and is man caused. He's a little thought for you to consider: THEY KNOW MORE THAN YOU.

  3. i did not say we are causing venus to warm. venus is experiencing a greenhouse effect due to co2 that is causing venus to warm. its about 800 degreees F now and getting hotter. just showing that co2 can have an effect on a planet. humans produce 100 times more co2 than all volcanoes on earth. NASA, an organization with some of the best scientists in the world, have data that points to human made warming by co2

  4. that 3% is a huge number. the carbon cycle is very balanced on earth. human contribution to co2 has happened so fast, that natural inputs causing the same increase in co2 would of had to take tens of thousands of years. humans only took 120 years to double concentration levels from around 200ppm to 400ppm. natural inputs are balanced, absorbed by oceans, just part of the cycle. though humans are adding co2 without balancing it out, disrupting the cycle.

  5. any intelligent person would not expect warming to occur in one hemisphere. what are you saying? there is something called an atmosphere that covers the entire planet. it traps heat, like a blanket

  6. 60% ice coverage from the canadian islands to the russian shores …60%!!!.
nearly a million square miles more than last year, yep definately more cooling
up that end as well, it's about time the ipcc went back to the drawing board.

  7. now we are getting to it, i'm pleased that you agree with your contemporary
dr stephen schneider, look him up because he stated in the 1970's that global cooling was happening and leading to a possible ice-age, this was also confirmed by the us national academy of sciences when they also adopted that view, so how can you state it's been warming for the last 120 years, when just 20 years earlier the earth was cooling?

  8. remember this was the 70's. we are currently in the 2010's. 40 years of advancement in science has changed the field. on average, yes the earth has been warming by about 1 degree Celsius since the late 1800's. im pleased that i dont agree that humans are not affecting the earth.

  9. me thinks mainstream science speaks with a forked tongue and not unlike
their ( so called) hockey stick have an extreamly crooked handle!
so let us just forget what our scientists told the public 40 years ago, is that
what your saying? and in another 5 – 10 – 20 years, what then?

  10. im not saying to forget what they said, im saying that advancements in science have steered us away from those ideas. how can science be mainstream? if there are facts out there, and they are able to be consistently proven through experiment, whats wrong with the general public believing it? and if we are going to keep arguing about what causes climate change then i am done. i cant force anybody to believe something. its up to ourselves to decide.

  11. on retirement 33 yrs ago i set out to separate the true science
from fiction being spread about by dithering mainstream
professionals, they were getting it wrong back then and even
with all the modern equipment they are still getting it wrong
today, john h nelson broke the sun's code with his angular
separation theory, assisting the shortwave radio industry to
get their intercontinental messages around the globe with a
    success rate of around 75%.
my work has never been challenged.

  12. we don't inhabit an autonomous earth, the planets are connected to the sun
electro- magnetically, producing sunspots and solar wind which is absorbed
by the planets, with high sunspot activity comes planet warming, with record
sunspot numbers march 30 : 2001 our planet showed warming at n/w passage
allowing ships to transit through it.
may 17 : 2013 began the solar minimum, north west passage increased surface
ice flows by 60% in one year, closing the passage to most shipping.

  13. slightly increasing! 60% in sea ice is a big number and it's due to solar minimum, climate is driven by the
number of sunspots on the sun, during the maunder minimum there were no sunspots for 70 years, they
have slowly increased on average since then, apart from the dalton minimum (cold period) to a record number on march 29/30 : 2001, bringing on world drought, with no plant growth co2 built up in the atmosphere it's only natural, but it followed an increase in sunspots!

  14. Pine Island has an active volcano on it and much of the West Antarctic ice sheet sits on the west Antarctic rift system which tectonically active and has a much thinner crust resulting in higher rates of geothermal heat flux affecting the role of subglacial melt water on the destabilization process of glaciers both on Pine Is and the West Antarctic.
