MIG Welding Basics

Hi, my name is Joel Ort I’m with
Miller Electric Mfg. Co. Today we’re going to teach you how to
successfully weld in the flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions in the
MIG process. It’s a good idea before you start your project to take some scrap
metal similar to the project you’re working on and practice on that so you
can achieve a proper weld when you’re done. And also before you start your
project make sure that you have some good safety gear, like a nice jacket, pair
of glasses, a good welding helmet, and a nice pair of welding gloves. Wires stick out for MIG welding should be
around a quarter to three a seven inch from the contact tip, possibly a little
bit longer for tight joint access. Generally the 25-75 mix of CO2 and argon
gives you the best overall performance and nice looking bead for MIG welding. For any welding, you’d want as clean of
metal as you can, clean the joint as good as you can, make sure that you have a
good ground clamp connection, that you clean that area, and if your material is
a quarter-inch or thicker, you’re going to want to bevel your joint for your weld
to get good penetration. In considering gun travel for MIG welding, the push
technique is the most recommended and also gives you a good view of the weld
puddle. For a typical butt weld or flat position weld, your gun should be at 90
degrees to your workpiece and 10 degrees tilted back, welding with a slight weave,
pausing side to side to avoid undercut. For a typical t-joint, you’re going to want the gun at
45 degrees or an equal distance from each piece and on thicker pieces you may
want to weave the gun pausing on each side to avoid undercut. For a lap joint, you’re going to want
your gun at 60 to 70 degrees directing most of the heat toward the bottom of
the workpiece to make one straight weld. For the typical horizontal weld position,
the first thing you’ll want to do is turn your welding parameters on your
machine down about ten to fifteen percent. We also want to angle your gun
upwards towards the weld puddle at around ten degrees to accommodate for
gravity. For the vertical welding position, again you’ll want to turn your
machine parameters down by ten to fifteen percent and you want to angle
your gun at five to fifteen degrees up at the at the weld puddle. You’re going
to want to weave from side to side pausing on the edges to avoid undercut.
And also with vertical welding, you can weld vertical up or vertical down.
Vertical down will give you less penetration and is much better for
thinner metals. Vertical up will give you more penetration for anything a quarter
inch or above in thickness. The overhead welding position is the most difficult
to do. Try to avoid it if you can, but if you need to, again you’ll need to reduce
your welding parameters a minimum of ten to fifteen percent.
Try to maintain fast travel speeds and then you can avoid having the weld pool
fall from the joint and onto you. Achieving a good quality solid MIG weld
is not as easy as it looks, but with a little patience and a lot of practice in
no time you’d be tackling any job that comes your way in your shop.

  2. This is MAG welding since your welding with an active gas that reacts in the weld.
    (The co2 is split up in Carbon, which binds with the metal and Oxiden, which binds with several elements in the wire.)
    Mig welding is for aluminum because it is weld with only pure argon (or helium)
    which are Inert gasses who dont react with the weld.

  3. @ljwartuk I am not a professional welder but If your doing things like body work it is perfectly acceptable to grind. If you are building something meant to be structural in nature I would refrain from grinding and rather setup the joint so the welds do not interfere with any other parts of the structure.

  5. This video is very helpful but the machine he is using my school makes it a sheet metal only MIG we use a Miller 252 i believe

  8. No,not at all.Make sure you have a good return/earth to the vehicle and you'll be absolutely fine..Electricity finds the easiest route to ground/return.

  9. Everybody has a right to their opinion, so there's no absolute wrong or right. It's fairly common for newer welders to have better results at first with MIG and stick, and then run into some difficulty with TIG. It's a different animal entirely, which is why many tend to gravitate toward one process once they're comfortable with it. We'll keep building a machine for almost any process as long you folks enjoy the results.

  10. Hi there my 87 dodge dakota truck frame needs new cab mounts wing part is very thin rest of frame good i want to buy a small mig like mabye a 110v core flux no gas will that do the job i cant use 220 at my place only 110 here any tips for me thats im glenn 1-519-995-1864

  11. Glen – We'd suggest looking at the Millermatic 180 or 211. See millerwelds site and the "Where to buy" will locate your nearest distributor or online retailer.

    Some welding positions are harder, in which they require more precision. Thus, with more precision you'd feel more obligated to take your time, lowering the amperage.

  16. This is intended to be an instructional video, but with everything mentioned, the video aspect leaves much to the imagination.聽 Why can't Miller get good video of the actual welding demos?聽 Other's are able to do it on YouTube, so why not Miller???

  17. I think Miller should get you Google glass. Shoot the video from behind your hood, that might get you better weld shots.

  18. I agree, Miller should get the camera a welding mask, it's hard to follow the movement when all that's visible is the arc.

  19. Maybe someone can help a complete welding newb out here. Why are you reducing "welding parameters" on some of the welds? What is the reason for that? I would like to get into welding for automotive and home use, hence knowing why the welder was adjusted would be far more valuable to me than just adjusting the welder for certain welds!

  20. I love Miller migs learned how to weld on with an old Miller mig when I was 12. I'm 21 now and still love welding although i now use a flux core 90 amp welder because its so compact

  23. All the fun stuff but no Arc shots? How can you properly show what your explaining without the reinforcement to show ppl? I've found hard wire is the most failed process. It tends to lay a fast freeze puddle that most interpret as a good weld and fail. Miller, if you really want to stand up in the advancement of America you would surely be invested in the teachings of our youth. Try harder to teach, not to preach. ( Corporate scum)
