Lady Gaga on ‘A Star Is Born’: “I Gave Something I Don’t Always Give” | Close Up

(upbeat music) – Gaga, when you were
considering taking the role in A Star is Born, did you have reservations
that it would be too similar to your public persona? – That’s an interesting question. Well, first of all. I wanted to be an actress before I wanted to be a singer or musician. So this was a big dream of mine. You know, I felt really excited and really ready for this part. And when Bradley came
to me with this story, the way that he wanted to tell the story and the way that he
wanted to shoot the story was what was so interesting to me. In particular, his vision to
shoot from behind the stage. So that when we were singing, you actually were looking
at the actress or actor from you know, behind. And you could see the audience,
that the audience really felt like they were on stage with us. In terms of creating the character, Ally. You know, for me I think for many years, I have
created characters for myself because I did not make it
as an actress. (laughs) So I made characters that I
could be, so I could be one. And they were always in some way, related to the woman that I
wanted to sing to, a part of me. For my album Joanne you know. I always had this vision
of a woman with like a baby in one hand and a
Pinot Grigio in the other, and cut-off jeans, and her hair you know, wild and– (all laughing together) Singing her buns off. You know, and going like I
never thought that I’d like Lady Gaga, but man do I love this music. So I had a vision for that woman. But for Ally, this was totally different, because it was a collaborative process. It was a sanctuary of trust. And so when I saw that trust with Bradley, then what I did, I said
okay, I’m going to have to become someone, that I do
not have complete control over. – And Mark Ronson said you wrote the songs as your character. – Yes, yes I did. With him, one song
“Shallow” in particular. Did I have reservation, no. I believed and I trusted 100% in Bradley, and I was excited that because
he believed in me so much, that I was able to trust him myself. (upbeat music) What I really admire
about what you all do, and because this is new for me, is that the amount of places that you have to go to from a deep perspective, to the nectar of your hearts, and to go deep, deep down
every time to play a role, and to bring that deep,
deep place every day to set. I mean, that is incredible. I mean, when I’m on stage
performing with, doing music. You know, I have the audience
and it’s like this adrenaline rush and I’m talking to
people and shouting at them. You know, with the Joanne
tour there was a bit of trauma because it was about
my father’s sister who died. But, you know. You’re doing eight shows a week, playing Joan of Ark’s mother. I mean, there’s no way that
you’re not going to the depths of who you are,
into a very scary place in order to do that. I just have to commend each
and every one of you for it. ‘Cause, I still feel like I’m recovering from playing this role. (upbeat music) I do certain things when
I sing and I’m on stage. I have like a certain way about me, when I perform. But I wanted to be pointed out, when I was doing something that would look decidedly like me, the
way that my fans see me. Because I wanted her to be so different. And you know, the things that
are inside my private life, that they don’t know about
me, those were the things that I was really using. All the reasons I put this
armor on for so many years. All the things I’ve been running from, I’m going to use that. But I’m going to erase
as much as possible, of everything else. – That’s very brave. – Do you feel like you have a very strong, performing, persona? Like do you feel like your
armor when you’re on stage is pretty bullet proof? – When my friends started to call me Gaga, and I was performing
on the Lower East Side, it was like a super hero costume.
– Yeah. – Like I just, I felt
like I could do anything. And, what’s changed about it though, over the years for me is that I grew up in a way, in
a culture of people that were constantly transforming. Like we were all really into Glam Culture, and like David Bowie. So we would all change our looks, all change our art. We were always, you know
shifting at the same time, and when I moved out to Hollywood to pursue my career in music, I was not in the midst of that. I was in the midst of me
changing all the time, and nobody really changed
very much around me. And it was very difficult. So I just was really conscious of that. When I played this character,
it was really important to me that I gave something
that I don’t always give, as a musician. (upbeat music)

  1. I never saw her before nor Bradley why she ever dressed up so crazy and looked so ugly when she sang amazes me. She is totally angelic and very pretty in the movie…just like a good person you want to be friendly with

  2. If u can pause it at exactly 28 sec mark look at the crazy broad from Fatal Attraction… if eyes had words i wonder what they would say here

  3. Her performance in 2018 A Star is Born left ugly old Barbra Streisand and lip syncing talentless Madonna in the dirt. Streisand and Madonna didn't even deserve to shine Gaga's shoes. Streisand and Madonna are actually second class compared to Gaga.

  4. I clicked just to see if she'll say, "There can be a hundred people in the room, and 99 don’t believe in you, but one does" … she didn't lol, but the interview was great!

  5. She's beyond all amazing, genuine, powerful and unique artist. I love how smart, insightful and eloquent she is on explaining the meaning behind her role on a star is born and as her as a popstar.

  6. I wish that the name Stefani Germanotta could be posted at times intead of the stage name all the time. . Thanks to Bradly (Cooper), he always says "Stefani" like at 99% of the times – when he talks about her.

  7. U need to step up Miss Gaga and disavow R Kelly and your working with him. Till then shut your hypocritical pie hole about supporting the Me Too movement. Got it? Good, and until you do, you can fuck off.

  8. To think Diana Ross didn't win for portraying Billie Holiday. And this ugly whore is actually getting " Oscar Buzz" for a mediocre ass remake character🤔🤔🤔Miss Me with The Bullshit

  9. Nicole is SOOOO CUTIEPIE. Gaga may be the shit this role..however, in no way do i see her as a character actress like Nicole or Glenn. Sorry. Type casting ..ehhh.

  10. she complain about sex harrasment but she was playing top less piano at a bar in San Francisco to get attention !!!!!!!!!!!! what a lie that girl !!!!!!!

  11. 0:03 HAHAHAHA 😂😂😂 I have no clue why she made me laugh there , I think it’s the face she pulls , it’s fucking hilarious

  12. I WATCH HER NOW AND THEN I LOOK BACK TO SONGS LIKE 'DANCE IN THE DARK' AND WONDER, "WTF HAPPENED TO HER?" HER MOVING TO ACTING IS THE ONLY NATURAL PROGRESSION BECAUSE HER MUSIC HAS GONE TERRIBLY DOWNHILL. SHE WAS FRESH, DIFFERENT AND VERY AHEAD OF HER TIME WHEN SHE CAME OUT WITH THE FAME. NOW, SHE'S BECOME VERY BORING, GENERIC AND PREDICTABLE. STICK TO ACTING GAGA, YOUR MUSIC IS SHIT NOW.

  13. Pretty funny that they keep interrogating Stefani and keeping her “in check” that she’s still doing business as Lady Gaga by constantly asking her these same questions. Fuck these sick mind-games. I see exactly what they are doing. And why are all of the women dressed up in red as the man is in the business suit??? Symbolism, much? Disgusting.

  14. Idk why she has to wear so much make up she looks so beautiful without… One of the most beautiful people out there without it

  15. 50 year old male normally I would not watch this but I am compelled to because the honesty she has in her soul and whatever she does she is an artist not everything you do is great at least you tried

  16. This was Lady Gaga at her finest hour. It's as if she got the chance to go back in time, and do this movie as Ally, feeling as what Stephani always dreamed of becoming.

  17. She avoids questions pertaining to her personal life by telling another story . What is she avoiding. .. she’s not comfortable talking about her self.

  18. THERE COULD BE A HUNDRED CATS IN A ROOM AND NINETY NINE OF THEM DONT BELIEVE IN YOU BUT ONE DOES AND THAT WAS DUMBASS BRADLEY COOPER

  19. shaky can't hold a candle next to Gaga. Lady Gaga has substance, warmth and such a wonderful soul
I don't see that in Irene Shank

  20. Lady Gaga is new to a "method" acting. So she definitely still has that love for Bradley Cooper, getting the emotion in the process.

  21. Lady gaga looks exceptionally beautiful here so does Rachel weisz I think that's her name. I gasped when I saw nicole Kidman she looks horribly overdone and like a mummy.

  22. Gaga you look the BEST all natural. I loved the movie but, when you died your hair or wig i was disapointed you’re a natural beauty very beautiful 💗

  23. I prefer her look in the movie which seems more "natural". However, she is very talented whatever she does!!

  24. She deserved to win the Oscar. It was unfair that the movie just won Best song. All nomimations were for winning
