Industrial explosion prompts evacuations in Pittsfield Township

and we continue to follow breaking news from Pittsfield Township where a mandatory evacuation is still in effect after an explosion at a welding company and this could have been so much worse a lot of people are counting how lucky they are to get this far but reports say the explosion was felt as far away as five miles all started with a propane tank explosion but the big fear was the other much larger tanks around a filled with highly combustible butane Robyn Loney live near the scene along carpenter road rod you just got word on how this all started I understand yeah we do and it did start with somebody trying to put propane in a larger tank looked away and then the thing ignited now the evacuation area has gotten much smaller we want to show you here we’ve been hearing explosions here and you can see the fire department right up the street and that is most of the fire contingent out here they are backed off from the building which is just down the street to the east and the situation is they’re allowing the tanks to bleed out which means that they are actually burning themselves out they’re burning out the gas from the tanks but let’s hear from the people who were here and saw this and were closest to it and were quite startled by it very scary we were roofing about 200 yards away from there we just big boom you could feel it you know and didn’t know what was going on yeah we need to probably get back out of here some of those explosions were you know you could feel it the compression and we were about a half mile away at that point so that’s why they moved us away you know with the wind and everything and you could just feel it kind of when it boomed it would go through your chest a little bit Ann Arbor welding sits right near us 23 and customer Jim Peters just happened to be on the i-94 bridge when he saw the first explosion and he worried for the guys he knows in the building he immediately started to warn others about the danger got back the building and warned everybody to get ready and then the State Police get started coming about 15 minutes later meanwhile I was shaking the building blowing up oh we have big flames was coming up and then the explosions and propane tanks were pry letting off pressure Pittsfield Township Fire made an evacuation area a mile square deeply concerned the larger tanks would explode and then we looked over into the cloud a fire and you know we were cops pulled up told us get out immediately didn’t even let us credit no equipment or nothing now it’s like all right I was hoping my friends down there got out alive you know it is amazing how calm everybody was even though this was a very very frightening situation and we can say that it’s official that the the concerns of Jim Peters there were allayed and none of his friends were hurt nobody was hurt in this everybody got away and now the fire department is just waiting to have its opportunity to put the end of this probably later tonight back to you markable there were no injuries right I know the fire department is very busy do we think that we’ll be hearing from them tonight well you know normally you get a news conference of some kind in something like this but they’re really kind of swamped and sort of in the process of letting the fire burn out so they’re saying at this point it’s likely to be just a press release but we’ll have to wait and see if they change their minds on that all right sounds good thanks rod
