Faculty Profile: Gary Rose, Welding Instructor

♪ ♪ GARY ROSE: POSITION MY
ELECTRODE ANGLE FIRST BEFORE I EVER TOUCH IT. I LIKE BEING ABLE TO TAKE
SOMETHING FROM JUST A DRAWING, BASIC RAW MATERIALS,
CUT IT UP, WELD IT UP AND ACTUALLY MAKE
FUNCTIONAL MACHINES, SO, SEEING YOUR WORK THAT LASTS
FOR LITERALLY DECADES IS A REALLY NEAT ASPECT OF
WHAT THIS JOB IS ABOUT. YOU GET THAT 6 INCHES OF
WELD RIGHT ACROSS THERE. MY CAREER STARTED WITH A
COMMUNITY COLLEGE CLASS. ESTABLISH YOUR ARC. LITERALLY WENT AROUND
THE WORLD IN THE AIR FORCE AS A WELDING INSTRUCTOR. YOU’LL BE ABLE TO SEE
ALL THROUGH THOSE BEADS. AND I TAKE A VERY MUCH
HANDS ON APPROACH. GO THAT WAY, WITH YOUR
ELECTRODE OUT AHEAD OF YOU. I GET IN AND ACTUALLY
GRAB THE STUDENT’S HAND. GOT GOOD BLENDING
AT THE TONES. TO SHOW THEM EXACTLY HOW THE
ELECTRODE HAS TO BE HELD OR… FIVE DEGREES OF
DIRECTIONAL TRAVEL. MILES MONROE: YOU CAN
TELL ME OVER AND OVER, BUT, UNLESS I SEE IT,
I DON’T GET IT. GARY ROSE: AND YOUR RATE
OF TRAVEL IS PRETTY UNIFORM ACROSS THERE, ALRIGHT, THAT’S
GOOD MAN, ALRIGHT, GOOD JOB. TO SEE THEM BE ABLE TO MOVE
FORWARD AND TO BE SUCCESSFUL, YEA, VERY, VERY ENJOYABLE. ALRIGHT, HERE WE GO,
WATCH YOUR EYES, COVER.
