Emily Akins, Welding Instructor

It’s funny because it’s actually
teaching found me. So I was in the field and because of my background because of getting a degree through a school through a community college like this
they asked me to be an instructor and I never thought about teaching before that
and then when they they brought it to my attention I was like you know what I
wouldn’t mind trying this. I love it! After six years of doing it like any job
I took outside of that. I was a part time or full time one job and I’d work
teaching at night it was like just don’t get involved in my teaching schedule.
Like I love teaching, I have a passion for it. It’s different because when you’re
working in the field. You know if you go out there you know how to strike an arc,
you know how to weld a bead, you know what you’re doing but now you have to
actually get somebody else to understand it and not everyone’s going to learn the
same. I like getting the guy that comes in and it’s something he wants to do but
he starts doing it and thinks you can’t do. It it’s just really nice to see that
transition from somebody who you know doesn’t really get it, just getting it
and knowing that I had a part of that. For me yes there is more money in the
field, I make enough money, I got a house, I got a car, I got two kids, I take care
of them. I enjoy that I get to go home every night and I get to see my kids. I
come in here every day they call me smiling because I was got big smile on my face. I’m always happy. It’s truly the one job I’ve had that I’ve never been
stressed at. It’s more like a family atmosphere this is an environment where
you’re able to not only do what you love to do, which is welding but you get to
show other people how to do it. So it’s not sitting in an office all day working
behind a computer, you’re actually interacting with students
in the lab, you’re still welding, you’re still doing what you love but in a more
controlled environment a more relaxed environment and at the end of the day
you’re you’re giving these students jobs. You know you’re bettering their lives.
