Well, hi there Since somebody asked me how I go about refurbishing used wheel bolts for split rims I thought I might just make a small video showing my process If you’ve ever taken apart split wheels you will probably know the problem Your old bolts will probably look like crap. Some genius actually painted these while they were mounted on the wheel once so there’s quite a bit of flaking paint. For the purpose of this video I’ll just pick one where the thread doesn’t need cleaning up. So, what you need to get these looking like this, all shiny and new, again is a drill mounted to a vice, a wire brush or wire wheel, either will work fine some metal polish, I just use Autosol which is for all kinds of metal but stainless steel and aluminium specifically and of course a towel. Now, carefully insert a bolt into your drill and fasten until it sits firmly but be careful not to damage the thread Activate the drill I’ll just take the wire wheel and hold it against the bolt to scrape off dirt and paint As you can see this already made a world of difference Note:this obviously only works on stainless steel bolts, normal steel bolts will rust if not protected. Now we’ll just take the towel and place a bit of the polish onto it. You don’t need much since the bolt is small activate the drill again and now just press the polish on the towel against the bolt and rub it in gently Now take a clean part of the towel You might have some polishing residue in the grooves of the bolt You can just wipe these off with your towel And now you’re done! Obviously this will take some time, because there is quite a number of bolts in a set of split wheels. But… The result is worth it!
