The company has also issued results of the first joint global effort to reexamine the concrete pouring process for large structures using 3D printing in collaboiration with Immensa Technology Labs. Aref exemplifies the influence of business men who are role models for the young generation of the Arab world to flourish in the sector of engineering and construction Aref Boualwan, hello Hello to you and thanks for hosting me You are a Senior Manager at CCC, from Greece to Beirut for this interview, we would like to thank you Thank you for having me, and to this nice program that spotlights this important topic How important do you think it is that we embrace the world of technology, not only because it’s the “trend”, but because it is a necessity for all the younger generations to be part of Today, The Startup, which is an example of Lebanese and global young generation, is shaping everything we see around us. Today if you want to call a Taxi, you use an application, if you wanted to watch a video you use YouTube. I think it is changing our lives daily, and is important for our existences You are at a company, one of the biggest construction contracting firms in the world, CCC Company, CCC Group, but also you have a direction in the world of Technology We are talking about 3D, we are talking about designing structures that can be explored before actually physically seeing them, tell me about this world that, I have seen videos, I think this is a revolution in the world of technology and design We saw part of it in the report but I would like you enlighten me with further details First I think we should address the motivation of why such technology is being used in the construction sector The construction sector in the past 50 years has not advanced at the same pace as other sectors such as manufacturing, car production, and others Today we are in need to introduce this technology into the construction sector to modernize it In various studies made, and we were at the forefront of such research in the World Economic Forum, we saw that in the futuristic world of 2050 we created different scenarios of how the world will be in about 30 years, and we came back to today’s realm to see what technologies, in the Construction sector, need to be enhanced in order to reach the levels anticipated for 2050 Today I can see my house, before it actually exists… in the Virtual World, yes For 3D Printing we have several objectives. First, we are trying to investigate something called “Affordable Housing”, creating urban housing that is low-cost, fast, and environmentally friendly. There is a big demand for this currently in the world as a result of war, migration, and natural disasters, but also due to an increase in population with the deterioration of buying power of individuals… of course you are addressing this need, give more details regarding this topic. 3D Printing today, is part of to the Virtual World, we have robots that are capable of working alone through systems. Today, the first house in the world, that we call “Livable House”; a house that you can take and live in, a 3D printed house that we built in Saudi Arabia under a program sponsored by the Ministry of housing… Explain to me more what do you mean by “3D Printing”, a term that you are associating with the house, especially for those who are not familiar with this sector… what does it mean? 3D Printing incorporates several industries; we have 3D Printing Concrete, which is cement laid to “print” a house, then there is 3D Printing Plastic that you can print such things as cups, then there is 3D Printing Metal What we are addressing now in construction, in this house, is cement. You actually have a robot which has an “arm” that is supplied with cement and the arm moves per instructions from a computer that “prints” the house without human labor. You are talking Cheaper and Faster Cheaper after further investigation, but definitely faster But for sure the cost will go down with time… yes, and one of our studies in the region is to develop the cement locally to reduce cost… but definitely an increase construction speed and more environmentally friendly Do you consider yourself today, despite your important position in the company, and your management of some of the projects… do you still have the soul of an entrepreneur? God Willing. For one to come up with an idea, and how to structure and realize it, this is the far-sightedness of a business pioneer. Because I’m trying to convey a message through you to other business pioneers who have advanced and now think that they have tuned into business men and stopped being Business Pioneers… how important do you think it is to keep the pioneer spirit I think, Maurice that you are looking for a very important point here, and it is puzzle than many business men live with. The solution to the problem and best approach is to collaborate and cooperate with Startups. In CCC we conducted research of around 100 Startups in the Arab World, and from those, we selected 15 who are associated with the Construction Sector and who we are cooperating with. When you incorporate a Startup in the ecosystem of the company, that Startup instigates entrepreneurship from within the company Aref Boualwan, you have dealt with Business Pioneers, you had the opportunity to see their, problems, their strengths, and challenges… If I were to ask you for quick words of advice for business pioneers in the Construction Sector… what would you tell them? In the Construction Sector you need to find the environment, which is the construction company that has the same ecosystem as CCC’s, that can embrace a Startup to allow it to try its technology and mature it along the process. This is first and foremost. To create a technology and not run it through the real world, is means of failure, especially in the Construction Sector. And in absolute terms… in absolute terms, there is a saying in English “Fail soon to succeed earlier”, believe that every failure encountered, helps you to ultimately succeed (an driving force… yes) Another thing we find is that Startups are sometimes in a rush to succeed and see their valuation sky rocket to 100 Million… things take time and take effort and maybe more to our society from the way we are brought up, from our homes, to our schools, to our work, and our professional lives, we have to educate people that failure is not a bad thing… failure is driving force, and a necessity to be successful and an entrepreneur God willing in future episodes we can focus on the Startups that you are cooperating with, that as you mentioned number 15, on how they were categorized based on their disciplines and offerings. Finally, is there anything else you wish to add before I conclude? No, just want to thank you for the fine program I want thank you Aref Boualwan, Senior Manager at CCC Thank you very much
