Arc Welding Tips For Beginning Welders : Finishing Welding Project With Proper Post-Weld Cleaning

Hi! This is John on behalf of expertvillage.com.
In this video clip, I will be talking about cleaning the weld bead. One of the best ways
to tell if you have made a good weld, is to clean off the slag coating that is covering
your weld. Again with arc welding, the electrode leaves this slag coating on top to help protect
the weld, so I am going to just take a chipping hammer and I am going to hit the slag. If
the slag comes off easily, that means I made a good weld. If I really have to pound at
the slag to get it off, that means I might need to practice a little more. Once you have
knocked the slag coating off, you can take a wire brush and clean it and then inspect
your weld.

  1. sorry i had to write this one, he is a bit freaky and he says, "Im going to take a chipping hammer and im going to hit the slag" lol i can see him doing that.

  2. man, you have to be at a perfect temperature to achieve this! it feels pretty damn good when it lifts up like that especially when your foreman comes and takes a look. just break it off with your fingers and throw it at him! haha

  3. I defintly need more practice mine don't come of for anything. What do you all suggest my teacher came to look at my plate today and didn't even say anything. I guess it was that bad LOL but it gets boring in that booth so after a while you start doing anything I start welding what ever you can find LOL been 2 day of doing nothing but beads.

  4. You hit it WAYYY too hard, you should be able to basically just take the chipping hammer and run it along the root of the bead, you need to take you're own advice and practice!

  5. I bet he types better than you. An ellipse is 3 periods. You can't just use them to connect nonsense and bullshit together into a paragraph.

  6. I might have to make an expertvillage video on how to make my own FrankenSlag-hammer. I mean, seriously, does ANYONE keep their slag hammers un-modified?

  7. on a practice pice the slag sholud come off without hitting it

  8. My instructor didn't tell me that occasionally as it cools it will ping off. I found out the hard way and a bit of hot slag hit my in the face today.

  10. Why all the haters? I found this series quite informative. I have never welded, Im an electronics engineer. Now I wanted to make a go-kart for my boy, so i have to learn to weld. Based on what I saw in these videos, I bought a cheap arc welder, with a little practice Im now building a frame and thankful for these tips. Although I do agree that it would be better to have them a bit longer.

  11. used to arc weld 12 hours a day 6 days a week for 8 months only got paid 9.00 an hour i welded any were from 24 inch diameter pipe up to 16 foot diameter pipe that was 4 inches thick had third degree burns sun burn flash burn. almost got killed several times by pipes on the crane but it was worth it i love welding

  15. If it is a good weld, you can remove all the slag with just draging the hammer over the bead. If you have to peck at it, it is not good. Even from the bad angle, I could tell that was another cold lap.

  16. I like Jon! I'm a total noob so I'm watching videos to learn (not to find stuff to hate on). He is very thorough, and each video being short is great since they are specific to each topic.
